In preparation for my TEDx LogoadasPatas talk on Flores Island in Portugal this Saturday, I wanted to share a snippet about fundraising messaging . . . In my speech I talk about how to inspire donors and volunteers by combining true influence and decision making (I'll share more on this topic later) and will ask my audience to compare two messaging statements.
"If you are looking to raise $100,000 to feed hungry families compare the effectiveness of the following statements:
- Hey everyone we feed people in need, help us raise $100,000 so we can help more families. Or
- There are 500 families who go hungry every night in our community, $100,000 will feed 492 of them for an entire year – that’s just $203 per family, or $0.56 a day. How many families will you feed, right here, right now?”
So which is better, 1 or 2? The first message is very broad, while the second one drills to down to exactly what the need is (on an emotional level), and what a donor’s support will do for a family in need (from a factual standpoint) and finally adds a call to ACTion."
True Influence is when you inspire someone to Feel, Think and Act.
